Great view of Mount St Helens with several walking paths for different view outlooks. Very nice information and gift shop. Do not miss
Great helpful knowledgeable staff. Awesome hiking. Ranger programs every hour. Junior ranger programs for kids. Awesome view!
But do yourself a favor, don’t let this be your final destination. Be a little more adventurous and go explore the different trailheads. EVERYONE and their brother/sister goes to the Johnston Ridge Observatory and get the classic pictures from this angle — but get off the pavement and onto the beautiful trails and explore the lesser traveled paths that take you to different places, views, and destinations. It’s worth it.
The Johnston Ridge Observatory is, of course, a must-stop destination if you’re headed out to see Mount St. Helens. They’ve created this unique educational Mecca where people from all over the world come to learn about the history of this active volcano. I’ve been there twice now and have seen and heard people from all over the globe taking in the sights.
Hard to describe the awe you feel when you see an active volcano right in front of your face. The parking is free, the viewing areas around the volcano are free. There is a charge if you want to go into the observation complex. It only costs 8 for people 16 and older and it's worth it. They show a lot of the scientific equipment and have movies and cool displays. What a fun trip.
This is hands down the best view of Mount St Helens! The view is awe inspiring. The visitor's center has a knowledgeable staff, a nice little gift shop, tons of information on the volcano and survivor accounts. The video is nice with a great view at the end. The ranger talks and guided tours are a nice touch, too. You can tell they all love sharing what they know about this area. Can't wait to visit again!
The free film is a little over the top if you ask me — sensationalist and reminiscent of a B-list disaster flick. Educational, sure, but truly ridiculous at times. But, after the film ends, the curtains draw back to reveal this truly monumental view of Mount St. Helens. That was worth the price of admission right there — and yes, there is an admission fee to be in the visitors center.
